The problem with most side hustles
DoorDash, Uber, TaskRabbit, freelancing on Upwork: they all pay you for time. Stop working, the money stops. For a dad, that's the worst possible deal, because time is the one thing you don't have more of. You'll make $18 an hour and be gone from the house to do it.
The side hustles that actually change a family's finances are the ones where the work you did in March is still paying you in October. That means owning something: a product, a brand, a store. It sounds bigger than it is.
Why a one-product Shopify store
- Startup cost is about $150. A domain, a Shopify trial, a couple of product samples, one week of a $10-a-day ad.
- Every part of it happens on a laptop after bedtime. Supplier messages, product page, ads. Nothing requires you to be anywhere at 2pm on a Tuesday.
- It scales without your hours. Ten orders a day takes about the same evening as two orders a day, until you're big enough to pay someone to pack boxes.
- It's a real asset. Stores get sold. I bought my second one on Flippa for less than a used truck and turned it into ionbottles.com.
The honest version
It's not passive, and it's not fast. Expect about five weeks of evenings before your first sale, and a few hundred dollars of ad spend before you know if the product is a winner. Some first products fail. The process is designed so that when one does, you lose $150 and a month, not your savings, and you pick a second one in a weekend.
What it is: a side income that can become a business, built in hours you already have, with a product you chose because you'd use it yourself. I started mine laid off, with a shoulder in a sling, from a kitchen table. You're probably starting from a better spot than that.
Where to start
Don't start with a logo. Don't start with a theme. Start with the order of operations: name, store, product, supplier, numbers, page, setup, content, launch, scale. That's the ten steps in the EcomDada course, and it's what I'd do if I had to start over tonight.
